Plovdiv railway junction project nears completion with major upgrades

Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister Grozdan Karadjov inspected the Plovdiv railway junction development during a site visit, describing the 298 million leva initiative as among the nation’s most strategically significant rail infrastructure undertakings. The project receives financing through the Connecting Europe Facility and national budget allocations, with completion scheduled for June 2026.

Construction progress reached 83 percent on track modernization linking Plovdiv with Krumovo and Skutare, while work on the central station upgrade and transport breakthrough stands at 85 percent complete. The centerpiece involves an 800-meter dual-lane road tunnel beneath Plovdiv Central Station, with 580 meters enclosed, designed to connect northern and southern districts while resolving a transportation challenge spanning five decades. Additional improvements encompass platform construction, accessibility features, pedestrian passages and drainage systems.

Regional Governor Hristina Yancheva, Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov and contractor representatives joined Karadjov for the inspection of infrastructure serving over 100 daily train movements through the junction.
