Economy Minister Petar Dilov discusses EIB funding for Bulgarian SMEs

Economy Minister Petar Dilov and European Investment Bank Vice President Robert de Groot explored financing options for Bulgarian small and medium enterprises during discussions that included Deputy Minister Doncho Barbalov. The bank outlined strategic priorities encompassing infrastructure development, innovation support, environmental transition initiatives and security sector investments, including cybersecurity, unmanned aircraft systems and dual-purpose technologies.

Dilov highlighted government efforts to strengthen economic competitiveness through export promotion, business assistance programs and transparent investment conditions. The minister noted that small and medium businesses form the economic foundation while emphasizing digitalization advancement, energy efficiency improvements and expanded access to funding mechanisms supporting technological adoption and production expansion. Bulgaria’s defense manufacturing sector, employing numerous smaller firms, contributes over 4 percent of gross domestic product while providing employment and innovation opportunities.

The European Investment Bank operates as a financial institution controlled by member states through ministerial board governance, primarily supporting projects aligned with union policy objectives.
