Election Commission rejects NCP’s request for Shapla symbol

The Election Commission (EC) stated Tuesday that it sees no reason to add the water lily, or “Shapla,” to its list of election symbols, despite repeated requests from NCP leaders. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said the party must choose a symbol from the existing list of 50 and submit its final choice by October 19. If not, the EC will make the decision itself.

Akhtar made the comments at a press briefing in Dhaka, adding that the government will decide on holding a referendum regarding the July Charter. Previously, the EC had asked NCP to pick an election symbol, but the party insisted on using “Shapla.”
