Experts rip 2026 budget as aimless drag
Financial experts criticized Bulgaria’s 2026 state budget on Wednesday as parliament prepared to receive the spending plan. Former Social Minister Hristina Hristova said the framework lacks meaningful reforms and reflects four years of unstable governance that produced flawed policy choices.
Economist Nikola Filipov warned that businesses face heightened competition from the public sector despite a minimum wage increase that fell 15 euros short of projections. He expressed disappointment that officials expanded rather than froze expenditures as economic conditions deteriorated.
Analyst Levon Hampartsumyan said budget architects must justify their fiscal decisions and explain the rationale behind proposed allocations. Specialists agreed that higher pension contributions will not improve future retirement payments but instead strain the system’s sustainability.
The panel concluded that wage increases, particularly for government employees, will accelerate consumer price growth across the economy.
