Experts stress health literacy to prevent youth diseases in India
Public health experts at the third International Conference on Public Health and Nutrition (ICPHN 2025) on Tuesday emphasized the importance of promoting health literacy and self-care among youth to prevent non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cancer in India. Dr. Zoya Ali Rizvi from the Ministry of Health highlighted the national mission’s shift towards preventive health and behavioral change, aiming to empower adolescents to take charge of their health.
Meera Satpathy, Founder of Sukarya, stressed the need to address adolescent health, including physical, mental, and nutritional well-being, to avoid lifelong health issues. Bonita Sharma from SOCHAI discussed the challenges young people face, such as malnutrition and anaemia, and called for stronger implementation of health policies, particularly in schools, to support adolescents’ health.
