Gadchiroli sees steady progress as Maoists surrender and Naxalism weakens

Gadchiroli, once a stronghold of Maoist activity, is undergoing a transformation towards progress. Over the past five years, more than 70 Maoists have surrendered, with a collective bounty of Rs 2.8 crore, mainly due to their disillusionment with Maoist ideology.

Charbhatti village, once deeply affected by Naxalite influence, is now free from Maoist control. Residents recall a time when everything, from public programs to development work, had to be approved by the Maoists, particularly Suresh, the village’s divisional commander. Since his surrender, Naxalite activities have diminished significantly.

Villagers shared how earlier attempts to ban alcohol by force failed, but today, under the leadership of the Tanta Mukt Samiti, the village is 100% alcohol-free, with decisions made through collective, open-minded discussions. Recently, 61 senior Naxal cadres, including Polit Bureau member Mallujola Venugopal Rao, surrendered to the Gadchiroli police, marking a significant step in the region’s shift away from Maoist influence.
