Galana Kulalu project turns around with first maize harvest in Kilifi
The first maize harvest at the Galana Kulalu Irrigation Scheme kicked off Saturday, proving critics wrong after two years of doubting its success. This massive government-backed project in Kilifi and Tana River counties is finally showing results, with yields of 28 to 30 bags per acre from the first 1,500 acres.
Thanks to major investments in irrigation infrastructure, including a giant well and reservoirs, the scheme is on track to become a food powerhouse for Kenya. The government aims to reduce the annual food import bill by growing local produce and creating thousands of jobs.
With plans to expand the farm to 20,000 acres, officials are praising the project as a game-changer for food security in Kenya’s dry regions.
