Govt to create Tk100 crore fund to revive jute industry
The government is setting up a Tk100 crore fund through the Jute Diversification Promotion Centre (JDPC) to involve over 1,000 entrepreneurs in revitalizing jute-based products, especially jute bags. Sheikh Bashir Uddin, adviser to multiple ministries, emphasized the need for research to increase jute’s usage and market reach globally. He urged students to innovate, lower production costs, and make jute more competitive against plastics. A seminar at the Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) highlighted jute’s role in sustainable development. Prof Hosne Ara Begum called for using jute bags exclusively at the upcoming trade fair to promote eco-friendly practices.
