ID card fees to rise in Bulgaria starting January 2026

Bulgarian citizens will pay higher fees starting in January 2026 when obtaining new identity cards, with costs rising to 30 leva for documents valid for a decade and 21 leva for four-year versions. Current charges of 18 leva and 13 leva remain available through the end of this year. Residents may replace their identification papers ahead of expiration dates.

People can file requests at Bulgarian Identity Documents offices within any regional location or submit applications electronically via the Interior Ministry online portal at e-uslugi.mvr.bg. Citizens possessing valid, qualified electronic signatures can use the digital system to request identity cards and passports or obtain certificates documenting events connected to document issuance.

Authorities require residents to apply for renewed identity cards within 30 days after their current documents expire. Penalties ranging from 50 to 250 leva apply to individuals who miss deadlines for obtaining new cards or fail to replace expired identification.
