India’s UPI to boost payments for tourists in Japan

NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) has signed an MoU with NTT DATA Japan to bring Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to Japan, enhancing the payment experience for Indian tourists. This collaboration aims to enable UPI acceptance at NTT DATA-acquired merchant locations across Japan, allowing faster checkouts and improving customer satisfaction.

Ritesh Shukla, MD & CEO of NPCI International, stated that this partnership is a step toward simplifying cross-border payments for Indian travelers and expanding UPI globally. NTT DATA Japan, a subsidiary of NTT DATA Group, operates Japan’s largest card payment processing network, CAFIS.

The MoU is especially significant given the growing number of Indian visitors to Japan, with 208,000 tourists recorded between January and August. Indian tourists will soon be able to use UPI apps to make payments by scanning QR codes at merchant locations in Japan.
