Iraq repatriates 40 Kurdish migrants from Libya

Iraqi diplomats brought 40 Kurdish migrants back from Libya to Erbil after coordinating travel through Istanbul. Ahmad al-Sahhaf said the embassy plans to return 35 more people within weeks and has repatriated 122 citizens since reopening operations in Tripoli.

Staff provided medical care and meals before securing flights with help from the Kurdistan authorities. Officials warned families about smuggling networks that exploit young people seeking passage to Europe through one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.

Libya holds more than 700,000 migrants in detention centers where militia groups control facilities marked by violence and extortion. Detainees face beatings and forced labor until relatives pay ransoms for their release.

The embassy works with international migration agencies to identify stranded Iraqis. Authorities hope returning migrants will discourage others from attempting irregular crossings that lead to abuse in transit countries.
