Martin Dimitrov warns of budget catastrophe if changes not made
Martin Dimitrov, a State Budget Office representative, warned that Bulgaria risks severe economic hardship within the coming years unless the proposed 2026 national budget undergoes significant revision. He issued this caution following the finance ministry’s recent release of the draft spending plan, stressing urgent alterations were nonnegotiable.
Dimitrov demanded the immediate elimination of five billion lev in extra borrowing unconnected to deficit reduction. He opposed hiking dividend taxation from five percent to ten percent and rejected higher social security payments despite improved revenue collection. Dimitrov also called for reducing by half the planned increase to maximum insured earnings thresholds. Abolishing the SUPTO system formed another essential requirement he outlined, labeling all these adjustments mandatory for fiscal stability. His remarks emphasized preventing long-term damage through prompt corrective action.
