MECH opposes euro budget, predicts early elections
MECH party leader Radostin Vassilev announced his parliamentary group will oppose Bulgaria’s inaugural eurozone budget, warning it will push the deficit to 6 or 7 percent. The politician told Bulgarian National Radio in Veliko Tarnovo that the fiscal plan will authorize another 20 billion in debt refinancing for existing obligations.
Vassilev plans to discuss with We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria the launch of a no-confidence vote against the Zhelyazkov cabinet before year-end. MECH will challenge the government on energy policy, criticizing the Westinghouse selection process and court rulings blocking state involvement in nuclear plant construction. The party claims fuel price problems stemming from Lukoil sanctions could have been prevented if lawmakers had approved their nationalization proposal nine months earlier.
The party leader expects snap elections after budget passage, predicting the coalition will abandon power and install a caretaker administration. Vassilev accused Vazrazhdane of copying MECH’s proposal for a Grand National Assembly to draft a new constitution.
