Melania Trump brokers child reunifications with Putin’s help
First Lady Melania Trump has disclosed that she has been in direct contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin for months, working on a diplomatic initiative to reunite Ukrainian children displaced by the conflict with their families. The initiative began after she sent a letter to Putin in August, which he responded to, agreeing to engage in discussions.
Trump said that the two sides have held multiple meetings and calls over the past three months, leading to the reunification of eight Ukrainian children with their families in the past 24 hours. She explained that the children were separated by the conflict, with some taken to Russia and others separated across borders.
Trump’s representative worked directly with Putin’s team to coordinate the reunifications, with Russia providing documentation on the children’s care, which the US government verified as accurate. She hopes to reunite more children in the future, emphasizing the importance of peace for the sake of the children. Russia’s children’s rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, thanked Trump for her efforts.
