Min Aung Hlaing warns of youth neglect

Myanmar’s military leader said on Tuesday that the nation must invest in young people to benefit from future demographic advantages, even as the country released census data showing the first population decline in decades. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing warned that failing to support youth could create social instability and trigger what he called a demographic disaster.

The 2024 census report provides essential information for development planning across social, economic and administrative sectors. Officials plan to use population figures to verify voter registration lists before multiparty elections scheduled for December 28.

The census examined migration patterns, education levels, employment, disability rates, housing and mortality. Planners will apply this information to estimate university admissions, expand job training programs and develop social welfare services.

Population changes stem from lower birth rates, increased emigration and shifting family structures. Authorities acknowledged that migration reflects economic conditions, political stability and employment opportunities compared with neighboring countries.
