China rebuilds quake-hit Mandalay ward
Chinese diplomatic officials and local health administrators gathered on Tuesday for the reopening of a renovated surgical unit at Mandalay General Hospital that sustained earthquake damage. Deputy Consul-General Zhang Wei transferred project documentation to Medical Superintendent Dr San Lwin Oo at the ceremony held in the facility’s nine-story building.
The ward restoration began on July 17 and finished on Oct. 16 at a cost of about 160 million kyat. The Chinese consulate in Mandalay partnered with Myanmar-China Oil and Gas Pipeline Co Ltd and Myanmar Conch Cement Co Ltd to fund the repairs, with support from the Myanmar-China Cooperation Association.
Hospital officials awarded certificates to the deputy consul-general and company representatives who contributed to the reconstruction effort. Dr Myo Thant Khaing, deputy head of the Mandalay Region Public Health Department, addressed attendees after Zhang’s opening remarks.
