Nechirvan Barzani welcomes Trump’s envoy Savaya

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed Mark Savaya’s appointment as United States Special Envoy to Iraq on Monday and said the selection underscores the strategic value of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in promoting mutual interests and regional stability. President Donald Trump named Savaya, a Detroit entrepreneur with Chaldean-Iraqi roots, to the diplomatic post through his Truth Social platform. Kurdish and Iraqi officials praised the decision, and veteran statesman Hoshyar Zebari described it as a bold move to restore Iraqi sovereignty and limit militia power.

Trump credited Savaya with securing substantial Muslim-American backing in Michigan, and the appointee promised to strengthen ties between Washington and Baghdad. Kurdistan Region Minister Ano Jawhar Abdoka called the selection a point of pride and evidence of confidence in Chaldean contributions to peace. Savaya’s appointment represents a shift toward personal connections, cultural understanding, and business expertise rather than conventional diplomatic credentials, and observers expect him to emphasize economic partnerships and energy collaboration to advance American and Iraqi stability goals.
