Amazon cloud outage knocks out global internet services
Amazon Web Services experienced a prolonged outage on Monday that disrupted streaming platforms, messaging applications, and banking systems for millions of users worldwide. Downdetector logged more than 11 million reports as services like Prime Video, Disney Plus, Snapchat, Airbnb, and Duolingo went offline for hours. AWS controls nearly one-third of global cloud infrastructure, and the company linked the problems to a load balancer health issue that created a massive backlog of failed requests.
The disruption affected mobile networks and messaging apps WhatsApp and Signal across Europe, while some British banks pointed to AWS as the source of their service interruptions. Financial analyst Michael Hewson said the incident revealed how dependent organizations have become on Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet for online services. AWS engineers identified increased error rates at 0711 GMT but continued working more than 10 hours later to restore normal operations across the cloud computing system.
