United 737 MAX hit by object mid-flight over Utah

A United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 sustained damage from an unidentified object while carrying 140 passengers from Denver to Los Angeles on Thursday. The aircraft descended over Utah about 40 minutes after departure and diverted to Salt Lake City. Aviation news site AvBrief.com reported the captain indicated the plane encountered space debris, and investigators are examining whether weather balloon fragments caused the collision.

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed on Sunday that officials are reviewing a cracked windscreen on the aircraft. Passenger Heather Ramsey told FOX 11 that crew members announced the plane had collided with an object. Unverified social media images appeared to show fuselage damage, broken cockpit glass, and blood on the pilot’s arm. United Airlines acknowledged windshield damage, but declined to provide additional details about the incident.
