Nepal urges Bangladesh to ease raw jute export ban
Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, met Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin on Thursday to discuss expanding bilateral trade. Ambassador Bhandari raised concerns about the suspension of raw jute exports from Bangladesh, which has affected Nepal’s jute mills that depend on Bangladeshi raw jute.
Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin acknowledged the issue but explained that Bangladesh is focusing on exporting semi-finished jute products to add value and promote sustainable trade. He suggested that Nepal could benefit by importing these higher-value jute products, which would help sustain its jute industry and boost trade between the two nations.
Both countries have a long-standing trade relationship, with Bangladesh exporting jute, textiles, and pharmaceuticals, while Nepal exports lentils, cardamom, and handicrafts. The meeting aims to strengthen cooperation under the Bangladesh-Nepal Trade and Transit Agreement.
