NHRC reports on human rights issues, police abuse in The Gambia
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of The Gambia has shared an update on the current human rights situation, including monitoring the Government’s progress on the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) recommendations. Basiru Bah, Senior Legal Officer, reported that five complaints of torture and degrading treatment were received, including two incidents involving the Gambia Police Force. One complaint was about a forceful arrest and assault in July 2024, while another was about an assault during a clash in August 2024.
Bah also highlighted concerns about the treatment of people with mental health conditions, pointing out stigma, discrimination, and inadequate care facilities. He noted the lack of trained professionals and rehabilitation programs.
On human trafficking, Bah confirmed that The Gambia remains on the Tier 2 Watch List for failing to meet minimum standards. He reported six alleged traffickers were prosecuted, with two convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Emmanuel Joof, NHRC Chairman, reaffirmed the Commission’s role in monitoring and reporting on the TRRC’s recommendations to ensure accountability and prevent future violations. He also emphasized the NHRC’s independence and the importance of its work in human rights promotion, despite challenges such as low cooperation from some authorities, including the Gambia Police Force.
