OECS backs Grenada on U.S. radar request
Leaders of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, and St. Lucia declared full support for Grenada as it weighs a U.S. request to install a radar at Maurice Bishop International Airport and station military assets nearby. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent said he would back whatever choice Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell makes, trusting it will rest on sound reasoning. He highlighted Grenada’s reliance on U.S. students and airlines, as well as regional principles of non-intervention.
Mitchell has not yet decided, calling the matter technical and requiring expert review. Gonsalves noted the U.S. aims to monitor Venezuela but pointed to alternatives like sea-based platforms or satellites. Antigua and Barbuda already refused the request, and Gonsalves affirmed that each nation must weigh its own interests. Dominica’s Roosevelt Skerrit and St. Lucia’s Phillip J. Pierre echoed his stance and pledged political support ahead of Gonsalves’ upcoming election.
