Orbán celebrates Budapest as site for Trump-Putin summit

Hungary’s nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán celebrated his country’s selection as the host for an upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Orbán framed Budapest as Europe’s last bastion of peace, touting Hungary’s stance of not supplying weapons to Ukraine and advocating for a peaceful resolution to the war. He argued that Hungary’s neutral position uniquely suited it to host these critical talks.

The summit announcement followed a recent productive call between Trump and Putin. Despite earlier signals that the U.S. might escalate military aid to Ukraine, Trump seemed to reverse course after speaking with Putin. Critics, including U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, accused Trump of rewarding Putin with prestige without securing meaningful concessions.

Orbán, a close ally of both Trump and Putin, sees the summit as a personal and political triumph. However, the summit raises legal complications, as Hungary is a signatory to the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Putin. Orbán has indicated he would ignore this obligation. As Budapest prepares for the summit, it stands as a symbol of the complex dynamics of power and diplomacy.
