PM Surya Ghar Yojana empowers households with solar energy

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is empowering domestic electricity consumers by promoting green energy and making them energy self-reliant. The scheme encourages the installation of rooftop solar plants, which reduce electricity bills and generate income from surplus electricity supplied to the grid.

Vikas Soni from Kondagaon, Chhattisgarh, benefited from the scheme by installing a 3-kilowatt solar plant, which eliminated his electricity bill and earned him a Rs 78,000 subsidy. The panels generate 15 to 20 units of electricity daily, contributing to environmental protection.

The government provides subsidies based on the plant’s capacity. The scheme, approved in February 2024, has a budget of Rs 75,021 crore and aims to increase rooftop solar capacity by 2026.
