Police fire shots at vehicle in migrant smuggling chase

Police fired five shots at the tyres of a four-wheel-drive vehicle carrying undocumented migrants during a chase near the Telok Panglima Garang Toll Plaza early yesterday morning.

The incident began at 4:30 a.m. when a team from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Task Force attempted to stop two vehicles — a Toyota Fortuner and a 4×4 — believed to be transporting Bangladeshi nationals. The 4×4 driver reversed quickly, hitting the enforcement vehicle and a Perodua Myvi, prompting police to open fire.

Despite the shots, the 4×4 fled against traffic, while the Toyota Fortuner drove through the toll plaza. Police later found the abandoned Fortuner but no contraband or injuries. The case is being investigated for obstructing public servants and attempted murder.
