PP condemns Kotsev prison transfer procedure
Continue the Change has condemned the prison transfers of Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev and former Sofia Deputy Mayor Nikola Barbutov, both detained pending trial without convictions. The opposition party questioned whether administrative actions undermined judicial oversight and constitutional protections, including the innocence presumption and fair trial rights.
Sofia prosecutors explained that regulations mandate moving pretrial detainees from custody facilities to correctional institutions once indictments reach court proceedings. Authorities filed charges against Kotsev before advancing the case involving Barbutov through the judicial system.
The political organization demanded complete transparency while emphasizing that Bulgarian institutions must operate independently without partisan influence affecting legal processes.
