President Barzani meets Petraeus in Erbil to discuss regional security
President Masoud Barzani met with former CIA Director General David Petraeus on Monday in Erbil’s Pirmam district. Petraeus expressed his pleasure in reconnecting with President Barzani, recalling their previous meeting during the 2016 Battle of Sahela. He praised the Kurdistan Region’s role in maintaining stability and security, as well as promoting peace and coexistence in Iraq and the broader region.
President Barzani thanked the United States and coalition forces for their critical support in liberating Iraq from dictatorship and assisting the Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces. He emphasized the importance of fully implementing Iraq’s constitution to resolve the ongoing political crisis and noted that the 2007 draft oil and gas law could have prevented many disputes in Iraq’s energy sector.
The two leaders also discussed regional issues, including developments in Syria and the peace process in Turkey. Earlier, Petraeus met with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to discuss the security and political situation in the region and broader Middle Eastern developments.
