KRG delegation to meet UNESCO in Paris for cultural cooperation

A high-level delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), led by Safeen Dizayee, Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, is set to meet senior UNESCO officials in Paris to strengthen ties in education, science, and cultural heritage.

During the visit, an MoU will be signed between UNESCO and the Kar Group, a Kurdish oil and investment company, to enhance cooperation on cultural preservation and development projects in the Kurdistan Region. The Kar Group has been involved with UNESCO since 2014 in the restoration of the historic Erbil Citadel, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited sites. The company has invested over $3 million in the restoration, supported by the KRG, the US, and the EU.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani recently announced that 95 percent of the restoration work has been completed, aiming to turn the citadel into a cultural and tourism hub. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, holds immense archaeological and cultural significance for the Kurdish people. The KRG’s ongoing efforts highlight its commitment to preserving the region’s heritage and promoting it as a center for historical tourism.
