President Nechirvan Barzani meets Petraeus to discuss Iraq, regional security

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with former CIA Director General David Petraeus on Monday to discuss political and security developments in Iraq and the broader region. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the United States, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region, highlighting their shared strategic interests and commitment to promoting stability and development.

They discussed the critical need for peace and stability, particularly in energy and economic sectors, and underscored the importance of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in fostering regional collaboration. The talks also addressed broader regional issues, including the peace process in Turkey, the situation in Syria, and the ongoing threat of ISIS remnants.

In addition to his meeting with President Nechirvan Barzani, Petraeus also met separately with President Masoud Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, covering the political landscape of the region and developments in Syria and the Middle East. Petraeus, a key advocate for U.S.–Kurdistan security partnership, continues to play an influential role in regional counterterrorism efforts.
