Raebareli pharma firm sealed in codeine raid

Authorities in Raebareli sealed Ajay Pharma Agency after it was found with 1.4 lakh bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, a banned substance due to its high risk of addiction and death. The shop’s operator fled before the raid, and legal steps are underway. Officials traced the supply to Indica Life Sciences in Lucknow, with suspicions of links to Ghaziabad.

This comes as India tightens its grip on drug safety after Coldrif cough syrup, made by Tamil Nadu’s Sresan Pharmaceuticals, was linked to over 20 child deaths in Madhya Pradesh. Tests found it contained deadly diethylene glycol. Tamil Nadu has shut the plant and canceled its license, promising stricter checks across all drug makers.
