Rohingya boat departures triple as camps worsen

The number of Rohingya refugees leaving Bangladesh by boat in the first half of this year has tripled compared to last year, with worsening conditions in the Cox’s Bazar camps and cuts in aid services, according to Save the Children. Around 1,088 Rohingya refugees made sea journeys in the first six months of 2025, including 87 children, compared to 364 in the same period last year.

Save the Children has urged increased funding for education, livelihoods, and security in the camps and called for regional cooperation to ensure refugees’ safety. Many families are considering dangerous sea journeys due to the deteriorating camp conditions.

Rahim, 20, from Cox’s Bazar, shared his struggles in the camps, where limited work and education opportunities leave many dreaming of a better life abroad, despite the risks. Economic pressures and insecurity in the camps push many, especially youth, to take dangerous migration routes.
