Russian lawmaker calls for execution of Latvian officials over deportations

A top Russian lawmaker, Vyacheslav Volodin, has harshly criticized Latvian officials for deporting 841 Russian pensioners, comparing them to Nazi Germany officials. The pensioners were deported for not passing a mandatory language test, some of whom were unaware of the regulation due to their age.

Volodin told the Russian parliament that those responsible for the deportations would eventually face justice, just like Nazi officials did after World War II. Since Latvia’s independence, the country has denied citizenship to many Russian-speaking residents, leaving them with restricted rights.

Latvia has increasingly targeted its Russian minority since the Ukraine conflict began.
