Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 XT hits power connector snag

Another AMD Radeon RX 9000 series card bites the dust, and this time it’s the Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 XT NITRO+ suffering a 12V-2×6 power connector failure. This follows the earlier disaster with the ASRock Taichi RX 9070 XT, leaving AMD’s new 12V-2×6 connector looking more like a disaster waiting to happen. Despite being touted as more efficient and using lower power than NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series, the new interface is failing under real-world stress.

The connector’s sleek design—meant to replace three 8-pin PCIe connectors—has melted down in the hands of users, with reports of charred pins and damaged contacts. Even with a 360 W TGP, the connector can’t handle the load, leading experts to suggest power and thermal monitoring systems to prevent more chaos. AMD’s supposed to be innovating, but this looks more like a cautionary tale.
