Senegalese president receives report on 1944 French massacre
On Thursday, researchers presented a report to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye about the 1944 massacre in Thiaroye, Senegal, when the French colonial army killed African soldiers who had fought alongside them in World War II. The report claims the killings were planned, and France altered records to hide the truth. Official French documents stated only 70 deaths, but estimates suggest 300 to 400 victims.
Excavations started in May at the Thiaroye camp to find more evidence of the massacre. Many soldiers had protested against unpaid wages and wanted equal treatment. The French forces opened fire on December 1, 1944. The investigation is ongoing to uncover the full truth, as France only acknowledged the massacre 80 years later.
