Sheffield Wednesday enter administration lose 12 points
Sheffield Wednesday entered administration on Friday and received a 12-point deduction from the English Football League. The Championship club appointed insolvency specialists Begbies Traynor as administrators after owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to complete a sale despite weeks of negotiations with potential buyers. The penalty drops to minus six points at the bottom of the second tier, leaving them 15 points from safety, with creditors applying increased pressure.
Joint administrator Kris Wigfield said the club had operated at substantial losses for years, with Chansiri funding the deficits. The league confirmed the sanction allows Wednesday to pursue new ownership and secure its future. Supporters boycotted the midweek home loss to Middlesbrough and have protested throughout the season, demanding Chansiri sell the club.
The Supporters Trust called the administration bittersweet after years of financial mismanagement and failed attempts to attract credible purchasers. Wednesday faced multiple embargoes for tax debts and missed five separate payroll deadlines this year. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed hope for a swift resolution while fans began queuing for tickets to the weekend match against Oxford.
