Slavkova says Bulgaria’s coalition crisis averted but tensions remain

Sociologist Evelina Slavkova characterized last week’s events as a serious government crisis rather than minor political theater. GERB leader Boyko Borisov used the Pazardzhik election results to construct his own narrative of events. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov canceled a Council of Ministers meeting, and the National Assembly lost its quorum as GERB demonstrated its continued dominance as the leading political force.

DPS-New Beginning will maintain its role as the government’s mandate guarantor, but the formation opposes replacing the prime minister or certain ministers. The sociologist suggested ITN may reject some existing agreements. Questions remain about potential ministerial changes and whether the National Assembly speaker will be replaced.
