Pazardzhik MEC voids Vazrazhdane councilor seat over vote manipulation
The Municipal Election Commission in Pazardzhik invalidated Hristo Valkov’s election as a municipal councilor from Vazrazhdane on Tuesday after discovering manipulation of 114 preferential votes during computer processing on Oct. 12. Commission member Vasil Stefanov from Vazrazhdane resigned and faces investigation by prosecutors for potential official misconduct related to altering 18 sectional election protocols. Asya Fitkina-Spasova replaced Valkov after the commission corrected his vote total from 207 to 93 preferences.
Commission Chairman Stefan Dimitrov said Valkov became ineligible while Fitkina-Spasova qualified with 106 preferences. Valkov denied knowledge of the manipulation through social media statements. The commission determined Stefanov bore responsibility for introducing falsified protocols and forwarded findings to the Central Election Commission. Dimitrov indicated the Oct. 12 Municipal Council elections should stand once authorities resolve the case.
