Sofia council backs higher blue and green parking fees

Sofia Municipal Council has approved controversial parking reforms that will double rates in restricted zones, with blue areas rising to 2 euros hourly and green zones to 1 euro, while residential permits will similarly increase from 100 to 100 euros. Municipal councilor Carlos Contrera, who opposed the measures, criticized Save Sofia and PP-DB coalition members for consolidating subzones while claiming to limit business subscriptions, arguing the changes will neither reduce congestion nor free parking spaces.

The expanded paid zones will operate until 9 pm daily, including weekends and holidays, with bracket removal fees jumping to 30 euros and towing costs reaching 75 euros. Contrera disputed claims that delayed start times would benefit parents dropping children off at school and questioned Sunday enforcement outside the summer months. Electric vehicles will receive three free hours starting in 2027, though they represent only 1 percent of Sofia’s fleet.

The councilor warned that looming garbage collection contract expirations in multiple districts could trigger citywide sanitation failures, expressing skepticism about municipal cleanup plans.
