Sofia court postpones Kiril Petkov’s case to 2026
Sofia City Court has delayed proceedings against former Prime Minister Kiril Petkov on official misconduct charges until early 2026 after his attorney requested access to extensive pre-trial documentation. Defense lawyer Ina Lulcheva sought to review 48 volumes of case materials that were unavailable before the hearing, prompting the judge to schedule the next session for late January of the following year.
Prosecutors allege Petkov exceeded his authority while serving as premier by directing senior officials in the National Police Investigation and Methodological Management department to perform unlawful actions. Petkov maintained his innocence outside the courtroom, asserting the proceedings would demonstrate he committed no offense.
Prosecutor Angel Kanev explained that witness testimony will proceed through abbreviated procedures, with four individuals expected to appear, including two former National Police officials who no longer serve in the Interior Ministry system.
