Sofia dumps private trash giants

Sofia officials canceled a waste collection contract for the city’s third zone, which covers the Slatina, Poduyane and Izgrev neighborhoods. The municipal government rejected all bids after no qualified candidates submitted pricing proposals, according to dariknews.bg.

Boris Bonev from Save Sofia called the move a delayed but necessary action toward improved oversight of sanitation services. The party advocates transferring operations to the municipal Garbage Plant, which reports directly to the mayor and faces fewer external pressures than private contractors.

Authorities also terminated procurement for the Lyulin and Krasno Selo areas, where municipal firm Sofekostroy already handles collection. Turkish company Norm won the contract for the Nadezhda, Ilinden, and Serdika districts.

Bidders have 10 days to challenge the cancellations. Save Sofia expects appeals given the substantial financial value of these municipal contracts.
