Sofia faces garbage meltdown as mayor flies abroad
Sofia’s waste management situation will worsen significantly during the coming months after legal challenges halted new sanitation contracts for five municipal districts, according to Boris Bonev from Save Sofia. Appeals filed on Tuesday against municipality decisions to cancel service agreements for Lyulin, Krasno Selo, Poduyane, Slatina, and Izgrev prevent officials from awarding replacement contracts until courts resolve the disputes. Municipal resources already inadequate for three neighborhoods must stretch across six areas, while the capital also lacks equipment for winter snow removal operations.
Save Sofia warned city officials a year earlier to issue procurement orders with sufficient lead time to counter anticipated obstruction tactics. Residents in five districts representing more than 500,000 people will face worsening trash collection problems heading into the new year, with additional neighborhoods likely affected afterward. Bonev criticized Mayor Vasil Terziev for delaying capacity expansion at municipal waste facilities that could assume responsibility for additional zones and dismissed mayoral assurances that conditions remain stable. He questioned whether recognition awards received during travel to Brazil hold value when residents await a potential environmental crisis and called for concrete plans addressing the deteriorating situation upon the mayor’s return.
