Sofia mayor unveils garbage collection recovery plan

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev presented a plan to the Municipal Council to restore and sustain garbage collection services, especially in the “Lyulin” and “Krasno Selo” districts. In “Krasno Selo,” one large truck, three small ones for narrow streets, and support from the “Slatina” area are in use, along with a team handling bulky waste. In “Lyulin,” four large trucks —one for bulky items —and a container truck are operating, with extra equipment and containers deployed on Zhitnitsa Street. Crews work in shifts to return to full service.

The plan includes more flexible contract management to avoid gaps when multiple contracts expire close together. The Public Procurement Commission will soon issue a transparent decision based on fair competition and clear rules. Ten garbage trucks are already available, with three more arriving soon, and 19 new workers have been hired or are expected by Monday. Coverage has reached 80 percent, with full service expected within a week.

Zone Six will be managed by the municipal company “Sofekostroy” EAD, which must submit a detailed work and business plan. The mayor also stressed the need to expand the Sofia Waste Treatment Plant, which produced over 90,000 tons of RDF fuel in 2025 and doubled recycling revenues compared to 2024. A staffing increase proposal for the plant remains pending council review.
