Sofia council approves budget update for key projects

The Sofia Municipal Council approved a budget update proposed by Mayor Vasil Terziev, with 42 votes in favor, eight against, and four abstentions. The revision reallocates nearly 40 million leva from the Capital Program that would otherwise go unused due to project delays.

The updated funds will speed up the construction and expansion of 28 kindergartens and 11 schools, supporting the goal of “The Road to Zero”—ensuring every child has a kindergarten spot and enabling single-shift schooling. Seven major water and sewerage projects will also receive support, including a reverse pipeline link between the Beli Iskar and Iskar dams to secure Sofia’s water supply.

Other priorities include urgent renovations at the First City Hospital, completion of the mineral bath in Ovcha Kupel, and final work on the “Sofia” Theater. The budget also covers key infrastructure upgrades, road maintenance at levels matching past years, and winter preparedness. Additionally, all revenue from the increased tourist tax will fund cultural, infrastructure, and marketing efforts to strengthen Sofia’s image as a sustainable tourist destination.
