Sofia’s 2,000 tree blitz aims to clear the air

Sofia has initiated a major 5.7 million leva environmental project to combat air pollution by expanding its green infrastructure. Deputy Mayor Nadezhda Bobcheva explained that the initiative aims to reduce harmful particulate matter, known as PM₁₀, through strategic planting.

The project will introduce over 2,000 trees and nearly 58,000 shrubs across 11 sites, covering almost ten hectares. Work will focus on landscaping along major boulevards, improving inter-block spaces in districts like Mladost 2, and implementing innovative solutions. These novel approaches include a vertical green wall at a city hospital and mobile planters with a misting system in a park.

Bobcheva described the planting of vegetation with proven filtering qualities as a direct investment in public health. The project is co-financed by European Union funds through the Environment Program. Its goals include improving life quality and demonstrating Bulgaria’s commitment to meeting environmental standards.
