SP slams ECI’s burqa voter ID rule, BJP defends it

The Election Commission of India’s directive to identify burqa-clad women voters has sparked controversy. The Samajwadi Party (SP) criticized the move, calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional, and urged the ECI to withdraw it. SP’s Uttar Pradesh president, Shyam Lal Pal, argued that the directive violates existing ECI rules and unfairly targets a particular community.

In response, Uttar Pradesh Minister Anil Rajbhar defended the decision, claiming it ensures voter identity verification and accusing the SP of politicizing the issue. He questioned the SP’s concerns, suggesting that the move targets bogus voters. SP MP Awdesh Prasad supported the call to withdraw the directive, aligning with the party’s stance.
