Sunni leader Safa al-Mashhadani assassinated ahead of Iraq elections

The al-Siyada Alliance expressed shock and anger on Wednesday following the assassination of Safa al-Mashhadani, a key leader and parliamentary candidate. He was killed when an IED targeted his vehicle in Baghdad’s Tarmiyah district, causing his car to burst into flames. Al-Mashhadani, a Sunni politician and member of the Baghdad Provincial Council, was a prominent figure and a strong contender in the November 11 elections.

Al-Mashhadani’s popularity, particularly among young Sunni voters, made him a major threat to the ruling Shiite blocs. His fiery criticism of Iran-backed militias in Iraq made him a key figure in the alliance led by Khamis al-Khanjar. Al-Khanjar condemned the killing as “treacherous terrorism” and vowed to seek justice for his death.

The assassination highlights the intense political rivalry in Iraq as parties prepare for the elections. Observers see the killing as an effort to weaken the Sunni front, especially as Sunni leaders have been increasingly targeted by political violence. While suspects remain unknown, many point to pro-Iran militias, raising concerns about Iraq’s ongoing political intimidation. The murder has sparked outrage across Baghdad and may further destabilize the upcoming elections.
