KRG launches major water, drainage projects to tackle flooding, scarcity
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has launched two major public infrastructure projects to address urban flooding and water scarcity. In Erbil, a large-scale rainwater drainage system is being built along the Kirkuk Road to prevent flooding and improve drainage in key areas. This project will protect neighborhoods and improve the city’s climate resilience.
In Sulaimani, the KRG will soon sign a $423.89 million contract for the Dukan–Sulaimani 3 Water Project, which aims to provide a sustainable water supply for the city over the next 30 years. The project will channel water from Dukan Dam through advanced infrastructure to address long-standing water shortages and reduce reliance on unreliable sources.
These initiatives are part of the KRG’s broader development agenda, focused on modernizing urban infrastructure and enhancing sustainability, including plans to address climate change and population growth. The KRG continues to invest in essential services, with projects like the Erbil Emergency Rapid Water Supply Project also improving long-term water security for the region.
