Tarique return ignites Bangladesh rebirth
Tarique Rahman will return to Bangladesh after 15 years of exile abroad, with BNP officials suggesting his arrival may happen by November. The acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party left for London in September 2008 for medical treatment following torture sustained while detained under a military-backed caretaker government.
Rahman guided his party from overseas despite media censorship that prevented him from speaking on Bangladeshi broadcasts. His supporters credit his remote leadership with sustaining opposition movements that led to mass protests in 2024 against the previous administration. Courts recently cleared him of approximately 75 charges.
The political figure is from a prominent family, the son of President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He endured personal losses while away from his homeland as his younger brother died and his mother faced imprisonment and illness. His supporters anticipate he will implement a 31-point reform agenda for the nation.
