Teachers suspend march, stage hunger strike over house rent demands
Teachers demanding a 20% house rent allowance and the fulfillment of their three-point demand have suspended their planned “Long March to Jamuna” and instead announced a sit-in and indefinite hunger strike at the Central Shaheed Minar for the next 24 hours. This decision was made at 5:30 pm on Thursday during a rally at the Shaheed Minar.
Earlier, the teachers had planned to march toward the Chief Adviser’s residence but chose to halt that plan. They also declared that all educational institutions would remain closed until their demands are met. A 16-member teacher delegation had met with the Education Adviser earlier in the day but alleged that the adviser showed a “mocking attitude” during the meeting.
The teachers, including Delowar Hossain Azizi, expressed frustration over the government’s refusal to raise house rent by 20%, instead offering a 5% increase, which the teachers rejected. They vowed to continue their protests until their full demands are addressed.
