Trump warns Israel could resume Gaza action

President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he might allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resume military action in Gaza if Hamas does not uphold its end of the ceasefire deal. Trump said Israeli forces could return to Gaza “as soon as I say the word.” This comes as Israel accuses Hamas of failing to return all hostages, alive and dead, under the agreement.

Hamas has returned 20 living Israeli hostages but only eight bodies, with some bodies not belonging to Israeli hostages. The U.S. has stated that Hamas is working to locate and return the remaining bodies, with help from third-party mediators. Trump emphasized the importance of returning the hostages, but also warned that if Hamas refuses to disarm, Israel may resume military action.

Trump’s 20-point peace plan includes a provision for amnesty for Hamas members who commit to peaceful coexistence and disarmament, and safe passage for those wishing to leave Gaza. The president remains optimistic about long-term peace, citing broad international support for the ceasefire agreement.
